Post 10-Uses and Audiences

Stop motion animation have many different uses. Some examples include, feature films, advertising, TV and music videos.
Stop motion animations are used for feature films, as they provide entertainment for the audience. There are many examples of stop motion films, including Paranorman and Shaun the Sheep. These are both polar opposite stop motions, and attract very different audiences

Paranorman is a dark, fantasy, horror themed stop motion. It is reviewed to be shown to children age 10 and over, due to all the ghosts, language and mild sexual references. Due to the use of the ghost and zombie puppets used, it shows that it is no longer suitable for younger children, as it would scare them. The sounds used in Paranorman is another reason in which it wouldn't be suitable for children. As it has to correspond with the genre/theme of the movie, which means lots of loud scary noises, that can be unsettling for them.

Shaun the sheep however, is a lighthearted, family movie that involves Shaun and his farm friends, trying to get out of their work, when they accidentally transport their farmer to the city, with no memory. This is much more suitable, as farm animals have been used as the main characters, which appeals much more to the younger demographic. The 'scariest' part would be in this scene, where Shaun is put in 'animal jail', but most of the young children wouldn't understand anyway, and even so, they've tried to make it more comical and less serious for them so it makes it more interesting.

Advertising is also a use for stop motion animations. For example, this Mcdonald's advert is used to inform people of their new drinks, and is aimed towards any age audience, because it is a fast food chain, and anyone can benefit from it. Due to it being an advertisement for a food chain, it has to be able to appeal to anyone, which is why they use a catchy, upbeat song, and bright colours to entice the audience.

Tv is also another use for stop motion animation. For example take the two shows 'Robot chicken' and 'Shaun the sheep'. They both use stop motion animation, however they are very different in humor, and with their target audiences. 'robot chicken' targets teenagers and young adults, due to its humor, whereas Shaun the sheep is made for more of the younger generation of children, as it features farmyard animals. Again, the sounds used in Shaun the sheep are much more child friendly, and can also be used educationally, as it teaches children the different sounds on the farm. The use of bright colours and child-friendly humor also appeals to the younger demographic. This is compared to the episode below 'Lil Hitler' which is part of the tv show 'Robot Chicken'. Its adult humor and content is why it is only suitable for teenagers and upwards, and is also how it attracts the demographic.

Finally, is music videos. These again can have very different target audiences, as we can see in these two examples 'Delta heavy - Get by' and 'Her morning elegance - Oren Lavie'. These two stop motions have different target audiences, which we can see and hear from both the style of the music video and the sound of the song. Delta heavy targets people who like dj-ing and beats, whereas Her morning elegance targets people who like more soothing and calm music. This is also portrayed across in the video, and it uses high key lighting and  bright white colours. Compared to Delta heavy, as although it uses high key lighting, it also shows things, and fake people being chopped up, which may be disturbing for some people.
