Post 8-Editing of footage, title and credits to a soundtrack, using video and sound editing software

Editing in stop motion animation is a very important stage in the stop motion process. This is because it is the final stage before the film can be published. It is crucial because the editors have to remove all the wires and green screens from the filming process, and replace it with real  backgrounds/backdrops, as well as editing all the shots together and making it look as smooth as possible. Once all your photos are taken, you must open up the app your using (most people use Adobe After Effects, premiere pro or Eclipse) and transfer all your photos onto the timeline. Then, you will have to adjust each individual photo for the photos to all flow smoothly together. If your photo includes wires or other objects, you will have to edit out these objects in order for your stop motion to look realistic. You can use photoshop or GIMP where you will have to individually select each picture with a wire and erase it, and then put the original layer back on top. Or, you can edit your photos i

Post 6-set building and lighting

To be able to make a stop motion animation, the animators need have sets and puppets created. To build the sets, the art directors must first draw up blueprints of the sets and props, so that the animators can tell them if they need to be able to reach certain places on the set. The sets are then to be built, out of a mixture of wood, cardboard and polyester. The set builders have to make sure that the sets are not too big so that the animators cant reach places on the set, or if so, make sure that the are trapdoors which can be lifted and allow the animators to reach the place they need to. With regards to the lighting, there are many different options for this. For example, Aardman animations claim to use more like theater lighting instead of movie lighting. So things such as project-able lights with adjustable shutters, and their most popular light the 'micro ellipse' which are very versatile and precise and can fit into smaller spaces. Another thing animators have to consid

Post 4-Technical developments

Image
3d printers now plays a huge role in stop motion animation films, as each individual character and facial expression is created this way. They have to digitally sculpt each replacement head and then send it off to the 3D printer. This allows the filmmakers to have a much wider range of facial expressions. However, with Coraline each sculpted face had to be then hand painted which was very time consuming. Coraline was the first stop motion animation to use 3d printing, they created a total of 6,333 faces, which meant they had a an amount of 207,000 facial expressions. Another massive advantage is that they can print in colour, so the models are all ready to be used, instead of having to paint things on. (3dprint.com,2016) Most stop motion animation animators prefer using this technique, as although it is still time consuming, it is less time consuming than making the models from scratch, and having to make however many different heads with different facial expressions for each characte

Post 3-Frame rates required to create a smooth illusion of motion

Image
A frame rate is the number of frames shown each second in either a movie, tv show and even computer games. 12fps Animation is usually shown in 12 frames per second. This is because the animators need to adjust each character in each frame in order to make it look like their moving, and bring the animation together. They settled on 12fps as this is the smoothest frame that can be shown without the characters moving too slow or fast, while still making it move like a proper movement. 24fps Filmmakers decided on using 24 fps because if anything lower than that were to be used the image would be moving slower and it would look more like a still image rather than a movement. (Reddit.com, 2019) But if it were to go any higher, the frame/shot will be moving too quickly for the human eye and it will not look like a film. (Quora.com, 2019) Another reason is because cinema projectors are not able to go any higher than 24fps which is why film makers can only use this. In general, this is th

Post 2-Visual Development

Visual Development process Narrative development for the nightmare before Christmas Tim Burton's the nightmare before christmas originally came from a poem that Burton had wrote when he was working as an animator for Disney. He then discovered that he could not draw the cheery animals that Disney are associated with so he quit. However he decided to keep in contact with another struggling animator 'Henry Selick' with whom he shared his poem. Selick took an immediate interest and asked weather it  wanted to be turned into a feature length film. Production then started in 1991, with it being directed by Selick and produced/ co written by Burton. However, it came with a few issues. One being that Selick didnt have a full script only Burton's approval. Disney then got scared and considered turning it into a short film or a tv special. With evidence from Beetlejuice, and Edward scissorhands, Burton had convinced Disney to go ahead with filming. Filming then took over 3 yea
